Digital Radiographs (x rays)

If you have visited the office recently, you have probably noticed some changes in the way we take your x-rays. For decades, x-rays at the dentist's office have been relatively unchanged. A small film captured the image which was then chemically developed and viewed by the dentist at your appointment. As is generally the case, the latest technology has allowed us to improve this process, with a number of significant advantages.

With the digital x-ray system in our office, a small sensor is used in place of the traditional film. The sensor is attached to a computer, so that when the x-ray is taken, the image appears on the screen in seconds.

One of the major advantages of digital x-rays is in the exposure itself. Because the digital sensor is so sensitive, we are able to decrease amount of radiation emitted to as little as 1/10th of that required for traditional film. The safety of our patients is always our primary concern, so from this standpoint the technology truly makes sense. Keep in mind, even traditional film x-rays use only very small amounts of radiation and are completely safe, but the digital technology allows us to lower even this minimal amount substantially.

The fact that digital x-rays do not require traditional film leads to a second major advantage. We no longer need to develop and process the image, which saves our busy patients a significant amount of time. Also, we are able to do away with a number of toxic chemicals in the office which were previously needed for processing x-rays. Lastly, we are able to produce quality printed images of your x-rays on the computer and even email electronic images to colleagues and insurance companies. The increase in office efficiency ultimately allows us to keep fees lower.

The most valuable advantage of digital x-rays is the opportunity to educate our patients in a clear, concise manner. We pride ourselves on giving our patients the information necessary to make good decisions regarding their oral health. In contrast to the tiny films of the past, we are able to see large images on the computer screen so that our patients can better understand the recommendations we make. The digital images can also be enhanced using our computer software to highlight specific areas. Patients are now able to see for themselves the areas we discuss. This allows for our patients to take ownership of the treatment options they choose.

We are proud to bring our patients the latest in proven technology that modern dentistry has to offer. Digital x-rays are a key component in this quest. Please contact the office if you have any other questions about this exciting new technology.
