Enjoy Foods (and Drinks) That Help Keep Your Mouth Squeaky Clean
There’s a lot to love about food. It keeps you awake and alert throughout the day, and some food choices offer wonderful nutritional benefits. We’re not talking meals here, just single food items. We’d love it if a steak dinner was heavy on nutrients, but it just isn’t. Drats! That’s okay though, because there are other foods that are just as tasty AND are great for your health. Did you know that some food can even act like a natural toothbrush and help keep your smile in good health? It’s true! Don’t think that eating these foods will replace brushing and flossing. You still need to maintain a great dental hygiene regimen (are you brushing and flossing twice a day?), but enjoying food that offers fantastic oral benefits provides an extra layer of defense against tooth decay and other bacteria. We’ve called Lincoln, NE home for a while now, and have enjoyed helping our patients achieve the best oral health of their lives. Dr. Craig Vacek cares about the health of each of our patients, and chowing down on food that can help keep your smile healthy and happy is one way to do that. There’s a good chance you already eat these foods!
Food is Delicious. Bacteria Isn’t. Which Tasty Items Help Keep Your Mouth Clean?
Obligatory note: Don’t think for a second that brushing and flossing fall by the wayside just because we’ve been blessed with foods that are nature’s toothbrushes. Remember, twice a day and for at least two minutes.
Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, to the food! Before we get to which foods and beverages should become an immediate part of your food pyramid, let’s go over the choices that aren’t so great.
- Diet soda
Fruits that have a high citrus count can break down your enamel while cereal and diet soda can cause extensive decay because of the insanely high amount of sugar content. If you absolutely cannot stay away from any of them, we’d recommend small doses.
Now the good news. Below are the foods and drinks that are great for your teeth. Some may be no-brainers while others may surprise you:
- Green tea
- Shiitake mushrooms
- Crisp fruits and veggies
- Sugarless gum
Not only do they offer great oral health benefits, they’re delicious, too! Food that tastes great AND protects your teeth? It sounds like magic, but it’s very real.
