Why Dental Cleanings Are More Important Than You Think
If you frequently skip your dental cleanings, you’re (unfortunately) not alone. A lot of people put off the routine care -- and so it’s probably no surprise that almost half of people in the US have gum disease to some extent. We urge all patients to visit us at least every six months for a checkup and cleaning. Let’s take a closer look at why.
Periodontal Health Is Key
Gum disease is a chronic inflammatory condition that causes bad breath, bleeding gums, and a host of other side effects. Left untreated, gum disease eventually eats away at your health gum tissue and leads to tooth loss.
When you visit the dentist every six months (at least), we can stay on top of your periodontal health to help you enjoy a complete smile for life. By measuring your periodontal pockets, or spaces where bacteria lives, we are able to determine whether or not you need gum disease treatment.
We will customize your care to your specific needs -- some patients need to come in every three months, some every four, while others can just visit twice a year without issue.
Catching Restorative Issues Early
Most people will have a cavity or other problem that requires restorative care at some point in their lives. If it’s caught early, tooth decay isn’t really an issue -- and that’s why we ask to see patients at least every six months. Within that time frame, we can usually address virtually any problem minimally-invasively, which means it’s less costly and less complex.
People with existing restorations also need regular dental care. No filling, inlay/onlay, or crown will last forever -- and we want to catch any issues (or potential issues) as soon as they develop.
What to Expect From a Checkup and Cleaning
When you schedule a checkup and cleaning with your dentist in Lincoln, you can expect our team to welcome you warmly and get started right away.
We’ll talk about your oral health first -- has anything been bothering you lately? Then our dental hygienists will get started cleaning your teeth and evaluating your gum health.
We will take x-rays before or after removing all the plaque and tartar from your teeth and around your gums. Your dentist will evaluate these images and perform a tooth-by-tooth exam to check for cavities, malfunctioning dental work, and any other irregularities that indicate the need for restorative attention.
Based on what we find, we’ll schedule a time for you to come back in for follow-up care or for your next checkup. And that’s it! Our patients always leave the office smiling and happy, knowing they’re one step closer to picture-perfect oral health.
