Are You an Ideal Candidate for Dental Implants?

You’ve experienced a lot in life and are now experiencing tooth loss. There are several factors that could contribute to why your teeth aren’t in the best shape, smoking, poor dental habits, or a medical condition can all lead to tooth loss. No matter the reason, you’ve lost teeth and want them back! Not dentures, permanent teeth. Dental implants are the solution.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are functional, attractive tooth replacements that are surgically implanted in your jawbone by a dental surgeon. When done correctly, an implant is indistinguishable from a natural tooth. At Vacek Family Dental, we use CBCT 3D imaging in our office with the Dentsply Sirona XG3D to give us a detailed three-dimensional view of the potential implant site and surrounding area. We also we use our cad/cam imaging with CEREC to design the final tooth. The tooth is printed using a 3D print a surgical guide that precisely delivers the implant or implants to the site such that the planned end result is precisely as expected and intended. This level of planning is not reserved for complex cases but is standard procedure for us day in and day out whether you need to replace one tooth or multiple. See a video about how it works.

What are the advantages of an implant over dentures?

Dentures sit on your gums and the suction between them and your gums is what keeps them in place. However, a common side effect of tooth loss is facial deformation, which includes the gums as well. Without teeth to stimulate blood flow to the gums, they start to change shape, requiring constant realignments or replacements of your dentures. Implants, like teeth stimulate bone, helping you keep the shape of your face and reducing the chances of bone resorption. This makes your jaw stronger. And since implants are fixed, you can speak and eat confidently without worry of them slipping out or shifting during use.

So who is a good candidate for an implant?

According to the American Academy of Periodontology, the ideal candidate for a dental implant is someone in good general and oral health. Since adequate bone in the jaw is needed to support the implant, and the best candidates have healthy gum tissues that are free of periodontal disease. You also need to maintain good oral hygiene and visit your dentist regularly. Keep in mind, chronic illnesses such as diabetes or leukemia may interfere with healing after surgery. Patients with these issues may not be good candidates for implants. Using tobacco can also slow healing as well.
